Computer Ethics

In this blog, I will discuss which of the ten commandments of computer ethics relate to my initial ideas and major project.

The topic of my major project is 'endpoint security'. Moreover, the commandments that I believe relate to the topic of my major project are:

  1. Thou shalt not use a computer to harm other people.
  2. Thou shalt not interfere with other people's computer work.
  3. Thou shalt not snoop around in other people's files.
  4. Thou shalt not use or copy proprietary software for which you have not paid.
  5. Thou shalt not use other people's computer resources without authorisation or proper compensation.
  6. Thou shalt always use a computer in ways that ensure consideration and respect for your fellow humans.
(Computer Skills and Research class DMUIC, 2023)

Since endpoint security is about the entry and exit points in our devices and systems, it is best if people in this profession understand the dangers of misusing the data and know the consequences of doing it intentionally. In addition, professionals in this field are being trusted with data, and it is their job to ensure it is safe from cyber threats.

My first initial idea is about 'cyber physical system security'. And the commandments that I believe connect to this topic are:

  1. Thou shalt not use or copy proprietary software for which you have not paid.
  2. Thou shalt not use other people's computer resources without authorisation or proper compensation.
  3. Thou shalt think about the social consequences of the program you write or the system you design.
  4. Thou shalt always use a computer in ways that ensure consideration and respect for your fellow humans.
(Computer Skills and Research class DMUIC, 2023)

People who construct these systems must be aware of the threats that may appear with time. Also, they must refrain from taking advantage of people by using their systems to harm others.

My second initial idea is about 'digital forensics'. And the commandments that I believe connect to this topic are:

  1. Thou shalt not interfere with other people's computer work.
  2. Thou shalt not snoop around in other people's files.
  3. Thou shalt always use a computer in ways that ensure consideration and respect for your fellow humans.
(Computer Skills and Research class DMUIC, 2023)

Although Digital forensics investigators use their skills to find evidence, it is still wrong for professionals to use these skills to harm innocent people. It is important to remind them of the computer ethics to help people trust them with their information.
